The Holy Cross Celebrations - One of the most important annual Events in Lucca with the Luminara starting at 8 pm on the 13th. During the Luminara, lights are turned off in the old town and all the buildings are lit by candles adorning doors, gates and windows. At the same time a long procession will go through the main streets of the old town opened by the banner of the Holy Face and closed by the famous music band playing and parading in medieval costumes. All participants bring a candle or lamp and create a parade of lights, while all the buildings along the procession route are illuminated or decorated with tiny glasses containing candles.

The Holy Cross celebration is connected to the antique reliquary, the Holy Face. This important wooden crucifix is located in Lucca's cathedral of San Martino.
